An F6F "Hellcat" from VF-17 "Jolly Rogers" assigned to USS Hornet (CV-12) has a split second encounter while on a fighter sweep over one of the many little islands that surround the main island of Okinawa in 1945. Between March and April 1945 VF-17 downed more than 160 enemy aircraft and produced 12 aces.
